Why a pair you used last week is unavailable today

Rates

A pair that quoted fine last week can stop quoting without anything being broken.

Common reasons

  • Liquidity. If there is not enough depth to fill at a sensible price, the pair stops being offered rather than offering a bad rate.
  • Chain problems. A halted or congested network means deposits and payouts cannot be relied on, so the asset is paused.
  • Maintenance. Upgrades and hard forks mean pausing an asset until the dust settles.
  • Volatility. During violent moves, quoting a rate that will still be honourable minutes later becomes impossible.

What to do

Route through a liquid asset. If A to B is unavailable, A to BTC and then BTC to B often works and costs one extra network fee. Or wait: most pauses are hours, not days.

When a pair cannot be quoted, Swap Heaven says so before you send rather than taking a deposit it cannot fill.
