Swaps and tax: the part people forget

Basics

This is not tax advice and rules differ by country. But one point catches people out often enough to be worth stating plainly.

A swap is usually a disposal

In many places, exchanging one crypto asset for another counts as disposing of the first. That can create a taxable gain or loss even though no money reached your bank. People who only track fiat withdrawals are often surprised.

What to keep

  • The date and time of each swap.
  • What you sent and what you received, in units.
  • The value in your own currency at that moment.
  • The transaction ids for both legs.

The order page at Swap Heaven carries most of this, and a receipt can be saved. Save it at the time; reconstructing a year of swaps afterwards is miserable work.

Where to get real answers

An accountant who has handled crypto before. The rules change, and generic advice from a forum is worth what you paid for it.
